The Department of Labor recently released a report indicating that the unemployment rate has jumped to a 34 year high of 7.6%. Daily, announcements are being circulated concerning companies downsizing and reducing their workforce. Although finding a job can be challenging during these tough economic times, consider the 5 R's: Rush, apply for unemployment benefits. If you have recently been laid off, please contact the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations at 1- 866-234-5382 to apply for unemployment compensation as soon as possible. Also check with your former employer regarding severance options and extended healthcare benefits. Relax and be patient. Finding a job takes time. Use online resources to assist with your job search or visit your local career center. Job seekers have access to a variety of programs and services to assist with your search. Services include training opportunities, weekly job fairs, job search assistance, job readiness workshops and a resource room with access to computers, phone, and fax and copy machine. Don't let the job search process overwhelm you or weigh you down. A successful job search takes time, energy and preparation. Reach out to non-profit agencies. Consider volunteering or working for a temporary agency. During these tough economic times, non-profits are in need of volunteers more than ever. Volunteering your time to help others could provide additional work experience and possibly lead to paid employment. It's a win-win situation. Likewise, companies in need of workers may opt for temporary help to fill their immediate employment needs. Research and develop a plan for your job search. When searching for a job, it's important to consider the location of the job, work hours, type of work and how the new job will impact your family time and activities most important to you. Remember, opportunities for re-training exists. If education has prevented you from advancing professionally, now may be an opportune time to consider getting the skills needed to make you more marketable for the workforce.
